Intuition

What is intuition and how we are defining it?

It is highly important to understand intuition before diving into anything.

Our brain has a left side and a right side. The left side is referred to as Logical where we do things like Language, Numbers & other calculations, and analytical thinking, etc. The right side of our brain is considered the creative side and it deals with things like expressions, emotional intelligence, imagination, etc. The majority of the things we have achieved in the field of AI are somewhat translated to the left side of the brain.

Taking the above statement into consideration we started looking at the right side of the brain. So, we looked at the creative side of things like an article written about How does Spotify knows what you'll like? because music speaks to the right side of our brain. Because the algorithms for Spotify or Netflix like companies are already made so we know how they work but it's a good case study to look into how something on the right side can be translated into a mathematical model as the following quote from the article we're discussing states:

We are more creative when exposed to diverse influences, but to make this work in the machine age, our tastes must fit into a mathematical model.

Why Intuition?

Intuition is a powerful concept, that is usually considered spiritual in nature. I was reading a religious story once in which they said that "it was intuition, that led the Mother of Prophet Moses to make the decision of putting Him in a casket into the river" without knowing what the outcome is going to be. Even you yourself use intuition in your daily decisions, so it's a very important concept that drives our decision making process. So, if we want the computers to be able to take better decisions, we need intuition in our AI algorithms.

Defining Intuition

According to Wikipedia definition which states:

Intuition is the ability to acquire knowledge without recourse to conscious reasoning. -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intuition

Consciousness refers to your individual awareness of your unique thoughts, memories, feelings, sensations, and environments. A conscious mind involves all of the things that you are currently aware of and thinking about. (https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-consciousness-2795922)

Intelligence is based on what is known while intuition deals with the unknown. Intuition is based on feelings, while intelligence is logic. Humans can make a decision based on what they feel, not necessarily what would be logical. Intuition has a lot more to do with a gut feeling, rather than a calculated decision-making process. Being intuitive is not the same as being intellectual. If we were to define Intuition in one word it would be “gut” or “hunch”.
